Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested procedures in aesthetic dentistry. A whiter, even smile boosts confidence; many patients seek professional whitening to lighten tooth colour. Tooth colour can darken due to genetics, age, diet, smoking, or certain medications. Coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco cause surface stains. Professional whitening safely removes these stains and reveals the natural tooth colour. How Is Teeth Whitening Done? Whitening can be done in-office (at the clinic) or at home with custom trays. In-office whitening uses a high-concentration gel applied by the dentist, with gums protected, and activated by light or laser. Results are visible in one session. At-home whitening uses custom trays and a lower-concentration gel; the patient applies it daily for a set period. Are Both Methods Safe? When performed under dental supervision, whitening is safe. In-office products and concentrations are chosen so as not to harm enamel. For at-home whitening, following the dentist’s duration and dosage is essential; overuse can cause sensitivity or gum irritation. Who Should Not Undergo Whitening? Whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, anyone under 18, or those with active gum disease. In patients with many fillings or crowns, whitening only affects natural teeth; restorations do not change colour. The dentist may suggest replacing fillings or crowns if needed. What to Do After Whitening? For 24–48 hours after whitening, avoid staining foods and drinks (coffee, tea, wine, beetroot, coloured drinks) and smoking to prevent quick re-staining. Mild sensitivity is normal and can be reduced with dentist-recommended toothpaste or fluoride.
